Kerala police engaged in a gun battle with a gang of suspected Maoists at a private resort along the national highway in Vythiri in Wayanad district in North Kerala on Wednesday evening.

According to police reports a group of Maoists reached the private tourist resort at Lakkidi under the Vythiri police station limit at around 9.30 pm with the intention of extorting money from the establishment.

Following the resort raising the alarm a Thunderbolt team, the state police’s special forces that fight Maoists, reached the spot following which an encounter broke between the Maoists and the Thunderbolt.

Though the encounter started right inside the resort which had a number of tourists staying, nobody is reported to be hurt.

An eyewitness staying at the resort told media persons that gun shots believed to be from the resort lobby could be heard in their rooms.

Under cover of darkness the alleged Maoists gang fled into the adjoining forests with the police claiming that they have managed to shoot two of them with one suspected to have been grievously injured.

Traffic movement along the national highway leading to Wayanad was disrupted for hours as police took positions on the road bordering the forests fearing a reprisal from the Maoists.

The incident comes in the wake of a number of reports of Maoists presence in the forests bordering Kerala and Karnataka.

More forces have been moved to the area for combing operations till reports last came in.
