A childless couple in Erode who paid money to “buy” a baby find themselves in the dock, along with the middlemen
Thyagarajan and Maheshwari, a couple without child after 15 years of marriage, made an agreement to adopt a baby from an impoverished family for a sum of Rs 4.5 lakhs. The couple had attempted in vitro fertilisation (IVF) but the baby died in the womb at 8 months of pregnancy itself.
Through their relative Sundar who is a native of Kaikaattivalasu in Erode district, the couple came upon Ganesh and Revathi and a middleman Balakrishnan who promised to arrange for adoption of a baby for Thyagarajan and Maheshwari.
Through the trio, Thyagarajan and Maheshwari “bought” a child and raised it for six months. The trio then came back and said that the birth parents were planning to file a complaint with the police and took the baby back.
With the baby gone, Thyagarajan and Maheshwari demanded their money back from the trio. The trio then stated that they would not return the money and that they would hand over another baby to the couple instead. They also threatened the couple with dire consequences if they went to the police.
On May 6, Sundar, the relative of Thyagarajan and Maheshwari, filed a complaint at the Coimbatore North police station. After five hours of grilling of all parties concerned, the police found that the baby was “bought” from natives of Mechery in Salem district. As a result, the case has been transferred to the Mechery police and those involved have been asked to appear before them whenever they are called for questioning.
