In 2016, Jayalakshmi’s husband Sonamuthu’s car was stolen by unknown persons from near their residence in Jaihindpuram, Madurai.

Instead of finding the culprits who had stolen the car, eight policemen attached to the local Jaihindpuram police station began to threaten and harass the complainant Jayalakshmi.

Jayalakshmi then moved the Madurai district court demanding action against the policemen who were harassing her.

Last week the court ordered that the Madurai Commissioner of Police must conduct enquiries into Jayalakshmi’s complaint and if found guilty, the policemen needed to be punished for their actions.

Following the order, an enquiry was conducted and eight policemen, including the Deputy Commissioner of Police Control Room Bhaskaran and Inspector of Jaihindpuram Police Station Ramani, were charged under eight sections of the Indian Penal Code, including: 448 (house trespass); 294 (b) (uttering obscenities); 323 (voluntarily causing hurt); 354 (assault or criminal force to woman); 427 (mischief causing damage); 506 (1) (criminal intimidation).
