The Theni-Cumbum highway was blocked for a few hours today as residents of the village of Devendrakulam near Veerapandi, Theni district, blocked the road, demanding action against the attacker of one Prakash, a resident of the same village.

The protesters, belonging to the Scheduled Caste (Devendra Kula Vellalars), said Prakash was attacked using a bottle.

The attacker is said to have belonged to the dominant Maravar caste also known as Thevars, who belong to the OBC (Other Backward Classes) community.

The protesters further alleged that the despite repeated complaints to the police about the dominant caste using abusive language, caste slurs and attempting to provoke the Scheduled Caste youth, no action had been taken against the dominant community in the area.

The Theni district police promised to arrest the attacker and took the injured man to the Theni Government Hospital.
